It was in 1836 that the silk merchant Léon
Félissent
from Lyon went to the
Beaujolais to purchase a property he found in a bad state of repair which
later became the Château de Raousset. He started renovating and extending
and he believed that the very dry and stony soil would be eminently
favorable for vine farming. The estate spread over three rural districts :
Chiroubles, Fleurie and Morgon. In the 1850s, the Chiroubles local
authority of ordered the construction of the Château to facilitate the
vintner's way back with their harvest.

Gaston de Raousset, grandson of Léon
Félissent, became Count of Raousset
and was successful in his attempt to develop the
estate. The first rewards for the Château de Raousset wine's quality
date back to 1869, 1871 and 1889. They are proudly exhibited in the
vat-room hall. After the death of the Count of Raousset in 1959, his
three daughters decided on a joint-ownership of the property in order to
maintain the quality of the Crus.
The S.C.E.A. des
Héritiers (professional partnership of the heirs) was founded in
1989
. This company
is the association of two owners (Mme de Lamotte : granddaughter of the
Count of Raousset and M. Jean de Goursac : grandson of the Count of
Raousset) and two vintners : Lucien Chavanne and Rémy Passot (manager
of the company).
The
company's objective is to develop Crus of high quality in the best
tradition of Château de Raousset.
The
S.C.E.A. des Héritiers du Comte de Raousset today exploits 12 hectares,
divided into three appellations : Chiroubles, Fleurie and Morgon.
The Gamay noir is the only grape variety used in
Beaujolais ; the soil type perfectly suits this variety, producing three
great Crus.
With
a yearly average of 70 000 litres
, the S.C.E.A.
des Héritiers du Comte de Raousset markets ¾ of its production
in bottles of which half
will be exported. |
